If you search for "marquee hire Ireland," most of what comes up is the traditional framed or pole marquee — the kind you'll have seen at hundreds of country shows and outdoor events. White walls, a ceiling you can't see the sky through, a vaguely clinical atmosphere.
A stretch tent is a different thing entirely.
What makes a stretch tent different?
A stretch tent is made from high-tensile PVC fabric that's stretched between anchor points — posts, trees, walls, the ground itself. Because the shape comes from tension rather than a frame, stretch tents have flowing, organic silhouettes rather than the boxy geometry of traditional marquees.
The most important difference, though, isn't visual. It's experiential.
A traditional marquee closes you off from your surroundings. The white walls form a room, and everything outside ceases to exist. That might be fine if your venue is a car park. But if you've got a beautiful garden, a hillside view, a riverside setting — you're enclosing people away from the thing that made the location special.
A stretch tent leaves your environment intact. Open sides are the norm rather than the exception. You can shade people from rain while keeping them connected to the landscape. The tent becomes part of the setting rather than a replacement for it.
Practical differences
Beyond the aesthetic, there are real practical advantages:
- Surface flexibility. Stretch tents work on grass, concrete, gravel, uneven ground. They don't require a flat, prepared base the way framed structures often do.
- Shape flexibility. Multiple tents can be joined together to cover irregular spaces. You're not locked into a square or rectangular footprint.
- Installation footprint. Stretch tents are typically lower-profile than traditional marquees and create less visual disruption to the wider site.
- Year-round. The fabric handles rain, wind, and the kind of Irish summer weather that decides to feel like October. Properly tensioned, they shed water and flex in the wind rather than fighting it.
When would you choose a traditional marquee?
To be fair about it: if you need fully enclosed, heated indoor space with a flat floor, acoustic dampening and blackout walls, a traditional structure might serve you better. Corporate conferences, indoor exhibitions, that kind of thing.
For most outdoor events — weddings, garden parties, festivals, beer gardens — a stretch tent will give you a more interesting, more natural-feeling space at comparable cost.
